St George’s, Excelsior in crucial clash

first_imgSt George’s College will look to maintain their perfect record when they face Excelsior High in a top-of-the-table clash in Group A of the ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup preliminary stage at Winchester Park, North Street today. Match time is 3 p.m.The Light Blues have scored five wins from as many starts to be on top in the group on maximum 15 points, just ahead of Excelsior who are on 13. Greater Portmore are also on 13, but have played two more games. Tivoli Gardens are on three points and Tarrant High are without a point in the group.With that scenario, a win for either St George’s or Excelsior will strengthen their chances of finishing the group on top. This will also ensure a spot in the prestigious FLOW Super Cup as well as the Walker Cup knockout competitions.The teams’ first round game on September 20 at the Stadium East was abandoned following the death of former St George’s captain Dominic James. He collapsed early in the match and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His funeral will be held tomorrow at Holy Trinity Cathedral on North Street.When the game was called off Excelsior were leading 2-1 late in the first half.St George’s College’s assistant coach, Marcel Gayle, says his team treats every game as being very important and today’s clash will be no difference.”Every game is important. We want to go out there and do our best. We are improving by scoring more goals and will look to continue that way,” Gayle told The Gleaner yesterday.St George’s will look to new captain Alex Marshall, Akeem Robotham, Ronaldo Watson and former Wolmer’s player Akiki Jackson to continue their winning streak.Excelsior’s technical director Xavier Gilbert is fully aware of the importance of the game.”It is a very important game for both teams. We want to stay in line for the FLOW Super Cup, so we have been preparing for this game,” Gilbert declared.”The team is coming on, although we are not yet where we want to be. However, the aim is to go there for a win,” the former St George’s cricket star added.Excelsior will look to national Under-17 striker Raewin Senior, Christopher Thorpe, Thorne Buchanan and Cadine Graham for a positive result.Today’s gamesTivoli Gardens vs TarrantSt George’s College vs ExcelsiorAscot vs Kingston CollegeSt Mary’s College vs Denham TownPapine vs St Mary’s CollegeHaile Selassie vs MeadowbrookSt Catherine vs Jonathan GrantPembroke Hall vs ArdenneJosÈ Marti vs Wolmer’sEdith Dalton James vs DunoonCamperdown vs Kingston TechnicalCalabar vs CumberlandHydel vs Campion CollegeBridgeport vs St JagoVauxhall vs Jamaica College(With the exception of the St George’s-Excelsior match, all other games start at 3:30 p.m. Home teams named first.)ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup points standingsGroup ATeams P W D L GF GA GD PtsSt George’s 5 5 0 0 30 1 29 15Excelsior 5 4 1 0 18 3 15 13G Portmore 7 4 1 2 15 16 -1 13Tivoli 6 1 0 5 6 17 -11 3Tarrant 7 0 0 7 3 35 -32 0Group BJC 5 4 1 0 13 2 11 13STATHS 5 1 3 1 3 4 -1 6Eltham 5 0 2 1 2 8 -6 2Group CKC 8 7 1 0 44 1 43 22D Town 8 6 1 1 13 4 9 19Papine 7 3 1 3 16 7 9 10ST Mary’s 7 1 2 4 6 23 -17 5Ascot 8 1 2 5 6 27 -21 5N Manley 7 0 3 4 4 18 -14 3Group DH Selassie 7 6 0 1 14 5 9 18St Catherine 7 5 2 0 10 2 8 17J Grant 7 5 1 1 15 5 10 16Ardenne 7 2 1 4 5 13 -8 7M’brook 7 1 0 6 5 12 -7 3P Hall 7 0 0 7 2 14 -12 0Group EH Trinity 7 6 0 1 15 3 12 18C Smith 7 5 0 2 17 6 11 15Waterford 6 4 0 2 18 6 12 12Mona 6 0 1 5 2 18 -16 1C Carthy 6 0 1 5 0 17 -17 1Group FWolmer’s 8 8 0 0 30 1 29 24C’down 7 4 1 2 14 8 6 13Dunoon 7 3 0 4 6 13 -7 9J Marti 8 2 2 4 8 12 -4 8Edith Dalton 6 0 0 6 2 25 -23 0Group GBridgeport 8 5 2 1 11 5 6 17St Jago 7 5 1 1 13 2 11 16Hydel 7 3 3 1 21 4 17 12Calabar 8 4 0 4 16 6 10 12C’land 8 2 1 5 8 14 -6 7Campion 8 0 1 7 0 37 -37 0KTHS 7 2 1 4 5 6 -1 7last_img read more

LORD OF THE RING 3 – LET’S GET READY TO RRRRRRRRUMBLE!

first_imgIt’s always a sell-out and this year looks no different. With just a few days to go before Lord of the Ring 3, the gloves are off to promote the event which is being brought by Letterkenny Rugby Club in conjunction with the Donegal Hospice. The committee has put together a fantastic line up this year again including Martin Anderson aka ‘Fat Chef Slim’, Stephen ‘Head’ McConnell from Donegal Aerosoft, Cathal McGlynn from Cash4u, Jeremy Worth, Orthodentist, Leonard Watson from Classic Casuals and Karl Sweeney from Swilly Drive School of Motoring who is following in his brothers footsteps Stephen and Brian who fought in the previous two events. The night this year also includes 4 ladies bouts. The night itself is run by whitecollarboxing.ie from Dublin. Owner of the company Mr. Cathal O’Grady said he is delighted to be back in Letterkenny for the third year running.“I travel throughout Ireland organizing white collar boxing events and the event in Letterkenny is certainly up there with the best of them in terms of atmosphere and professionalism. It is certainly a night I look forward too.” Mr Danny Ryan who coaches the boxers said he was delighted to be associated with the event this year again.“The boxers have gone through and extensive 7 week training programme and judging from the standard of the sparring it is certainly going to be as good if not better than previous years.”Boyd Robinson chairperson of the organizing committee said they are delighted with the response from the public this year.“The amount of boxers who came forward asking to participate was fantastic and testament of the high regard the event is held in the town.“This year we hope to provide the public with yet another memorable night and it is definitely a night not to be missed. We welcome our new charity partners this year the Donegal Hospice and I have no doubt the event will be the same success as it was the previous 2 years.“To date the event has raised €72,000 in total so hopefully after this year we will have surpassed the €100,000 mark. I am also delighted and would like to thank O’Gorman & Cunningham Solicitors who are our main sponsors for the event for the third year running.”The event will take place this year in the Silver Tassie on Friday 18th May and tickets are available for purchase at the Silver Tassie, Charlie Robinson estate agents or the Central Bar.
