Timberland Announces SpongeBob SquarePants CollaborationHere’s a Closer Look at the Nike Kyrie 5 SpongeBob Pack Stay on target They might as well shut down E3 2019 because THQ Nordic just made the biggest video game announcement you could possibly imagine. And they didn’t even have to go on 8chan to do it. Imagine our surprise this morning when the publisher dropped the absolute bomb that the one and only SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is coming back. No, you aren’t dreaming.Check out this first teaser for SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated!Okay, so why is the return of this random licensed cartoon kids game from 2003 being treated like a bigger deal than the Final Fantasy VII remake? As usual, you can blame the internet. The original Battle for Bikini Bottom seems like a fine enough game of its kind, a mascot 3D platformer with a Donkey Kong 64-esque character switching mechanic you don’t really see a lot these days. But it’s definitely not something worth remembering. And yet for some inexplicable reason the internet latched onto this game as an ironic cult classic to keep championing. There’s a vibrant speedrunning community surrounding this game. People hired weird old men on YouTube to make new trailers for this game. Combine all that with developer Heavy Iron Studios expressing interest in a remake (along with THQ Nordic surely trying to foster the good relationship with Nickelodeon its namesake once had) and now we can look forward to this remaster. It’s the video game equivalent of those SpongeBob meme toys.So look forward to SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom coming in 2020 to all consoles and PC. Along with upgraded visuals we can also expect a new multiplayer mode. And if that’s not enough, there’s a new SpongeBob prequel cartoon coming, too. Following next summer’s film It’s a Wonderful Sponge, the prequel Kamp Koral will follow a 10-year-old SpongeBob at summer camp. And we thought the SpongeBob broadway musical was a lot.
