That will be followed by lap skating and training programs from September through April. Skaters taking part come from twelve countries and will be putting in their best efforts in four separate distances over three days at the Pomeroy Sport Centre. In a release Elks Vice-President Wim Kok said, “I think it’s awesome. It’s a great thing for the city to host this, I mean, how often do you have world championships or host world games. I’ve been at a couple of these events in Calgary and you have some really good masters. There were some former Olympians and world champions there.”The Elks have been determined in their efforts to land the event as they had applied two other times. Indoor facilities like the Pomeroy Sport Centre are said to be held in high regard because of the guaranteed ice conditions.- Advertisement -A firm date in 2017 has not yet been set for the event. It’s hoped that the World Masters’ will be able to be held close to the time the Oval Finale is taking place in Calgary.“We’ve bid three times and the first two times we didn’t get anything. Now there was an opening and we got it. We haven’t set a specific date yet because we’re looking at seeing if we can hold it a week before or after the Oval Finale in Calgary. That way the international athletes have the opportunity to skate in two big events within a week,” Kok explained.Mayor Lori Ackerman credited the work of the Elks staff and the City to make it possible to bring the event to the community and looks forward to having young people see the possibilities that could present itself in the future.Advertisementlast_img read more
