‘He’s a typical Man United player’ – Rene Meulensteen backs Memphis Depay to be Old Trafford star

first_imgMemphis Depay is perfectly suited to Manchester United, according to the club’s former coach Rene Meulensteen. The 21-year-old has agreed to join his former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford in a £25million deal after an impressive season for PSV Eindhoven, and Meulensteen believes his fellow countryman will prove a hit in the Premier League.“It is a very promising signing for Manchester United,” said the Dutch coach, who spent more than a decade on United’s coaching staff under Sir Alex Ferguson.“He is another one that comes off the conveyor belt of Holland that has produced many good players over the years. And I think he is a typical Manchester United player.“The biggest advantage for Memphis coming to Man United is Louis van Gaal being there. He knows him, he had him as a player in the national team, and he knows exactly how he is going to use him.“I can see Man United moving to a 4-3-3 and he is a typical winger who can play on either side.“He has got a great combination of power and strength and pace. He is very, very quick. If you have got pace, especially in a strong league like the Premier League, it is a great asset to have.”last_img read more

first_img Shaw’s winner Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw inspired Manchester United to an opening-day victory as they ignored background noise and their deadline-day frustration to overcome Leicester.Referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot in the second minute with none of the hesitation shown in Pogba’s run up to the spot-kick. The shuffling approach may well become a meme, but a superb finish past Kasper Schmeichel justified it. Tottenham predicted XI to face Brighton with Mourinho expected to make big changes It wasn’t all one-way traffic and Leicester tested David De Gea on numerous occasions, but it was Shaw, who has endured such a rough ride from Mourinho, who was the unlikely hero. With seven minutes remaining, he flicked the ball around Leicester debutant Ricardo Pereira before sending a low left-footed strike home in front of a rocking Stretford End.Jamie Vardy pulled one back in stoppage time after Pereira’s cross came back off the post, and despite plenty of late pressure, United held on to seal a vital three points.Star man possible standings LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS The £52m summer signing looked like a man who had been playing at Old Trafford for years.
