BCCI sources say government to take final callSpin great Harbhajan Singh has urged India to not play Pakistan in the upcoming Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. Not surprisingly, cricketing ties have been hit as well with a shadow of doubt over the marquee India-Pakistan clash at the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.India and Pakistan, the powerhouses of Asian cricket, haven’t played bilateral cricket since Pakistan’s visit to their neighbouring country in 2012-13 for a three-match ODI series. Both the teams though have been meeting at key tournaments organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).However, several members from the Indian cricket fraternity have urged India to boycott the World Cup group-stage match against Pakistan, scheduled to be held on June 16 at Old Trafford, Manchester after Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the ghastly attack on the Indian paramilitary forces.Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh spoke out strongly against India continuing sporting ties with Pakistan and opined India have the firepower to quality for the semi-final even without meeting Pakistan in the group stages of the World Cup. Notably, all 10 teams at the World Cup play nine matches each in the group stage (single-legged round robin) and the top four will directly make the semi-final.”No bilateral matches happening from the last 10 years between India and Pakistan. India is only playing Pakistan in ICC tournaments. Now, we in the BCCI will follow further government decision on it.”BCCI CEO will follow government order, whether India has to play ICC matches with Pakistan or not. If government thinks that India should not play vs Pakistan, BCCI will definitely follow the instruction,” former BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said on Indo-Pak cricket.advertisementMeanwhile, this issue will be discussed on the sidelines of the ICC meeting on February 27 in Dubai.ICC sources: There are chances that the India-Pakistan World Cup clash will be discussed on the sidelines of ICC meeting to be held in Dubai from 27th February. (@ANI) February 20, 2019BCCI hasn’t approached the ICC over India-Pakistan World Cup tieMaintaining that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t approached the ICC over issues surrounding the India-Pakistan clash, a BCCI source said that regardless of ICC’s ruling, the final call on the tie will be taken by the Indian government.”Situation will get clearer after some time, a little closer to the World Cup. ICC has nothing to do with it. If the government at that point in time feels we shouldn’t play, it’s obvious that we won’t play,” the source said.”But the result of that would be that Pakistan will get the points of the match & if it is final (b/w India & Pakistan), they will win the World Cup without even playing. We haven’t yet approached ICC in this regard.”The response comes a day after International Cricket Council said it does not foresee any change in the schedule of the mega event starting May 30. ICC CEO Dave Richardson told the PTI there is no such indication as of now that the match will be cancelled.”Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident and we will be monitoring the situation with our Members,” Richardson said, offering his condolences on the ghastly terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred.”There is no indication that any (of the) matches at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will not go ahead as planned”Several state associations in the country, including Bengaluru and Rajasthan, have either removed or covered portraits of Pakistan cricketers, including that of prime minister Imran Khan, from their respective stadiums.(With inputs from Rasesh Mandani)Also Read | No indication that any of World Cup matches will not go ahead as per plan: ICC CEOAlso Read | Teach Pakistan a lesson, even if it means aar paar ki ladaai: Yuzvendra ChahalAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
